§ 02

Read the event terms first

Every auction has its own terms. They decide what you will actually pay and how you will receive what you win. Read them before registering, not after winning.

Checklist · Find these in the terms

  • Buyer premium rate and how it is applied
  • Applicable taxes and any exemptions process
  • Accepted payment methods and the payment deadline
  • Pickup location, dates and times, if pickup is offered
  • Whether shipping is offered, by whom, and how it is quoted
  • What happens if a lot is not paid for or collected on time

§ 03

Register and get approved

  1. 01

Create or sign in to your HiBid account

Use the link on the auction overview to reach the right catalog.

  2. 02

    Register for this specific auction

Registration is usually per event. You may be asked to accept the terms and provide payment details.

  3. 03

    Allow time for approval

Register before bidding closes, not in the final minutes, in case approval is needed.

§ 04

Budget for the full cost

The winning bid is not the total. Your invoice will usually add buyer premium and applicable taxes, and possibly shipping or handling. Work backwards from what you are willing to spend in total.

Your total limitEverything included

Less fulfillmentTravel or a shipping estimate

Less premium and taxAt that event’s published rates

Maximum bidThe hammer price you can afford

Work down from the total. No rates are shown because they are set per event.
  1. 01

    Decide your total limit

The most you are prepared to pay, all charges included.

  2. 02

    Subtract expected fulfillment costs

Your travel for pickup, or a shipping estimate if one is offered.

  3. 03

    Remove the premium and tax

Using the rates in that event’s terms, work out the hammer price that leaves you within your limit.

  4. 04

Set that as your maximum bid

And keep to it. Auctions reward patience more than momentum.

§ 05

Ask condition questions early

If a description leaves a question about condition, size, marks or completeness, ask before bidding, with the auction name and lot number. Answers take time; the last hour of an auction is too late.

§ 06

After you win

Checklist · Close out cleanly

  • Check your HiBid invoice against the lots you won.
  • Pay by the deadline using an accepted method.
  • Confirm your pickup time or shipping arrangement as described in the event terms.
  • Bring your invoice and appropriate packing materials if collecting in person.
  • Inspect items at pickup or on delivery and raise any issue promptly through the channel the terms specify.

Items are released for pickup or shipment once payment has cleared.
